Spooky Spider Cheese Ball

This is not my typical kind of recipe, but I needed to do some kind of Halloween-themed food for a student party, and I really wanted to do something savory.  If you want some genuinely impressive Halloween eats you should head over to my friend Beth’s blog, Hungry Happenings, but if you just want a creepy spider cheeseball (actually two of them), have I got an easy recipe for you:

Yeah, I know.  I am a little craft impaired.  But hey, isn’t he kind of creepy, spider-y cute?  Kind of???  Humor me.

I am serving Mr. Spider with baby carrots and crackers, and I have a back-up Mr. Spider for when the first one has been devoured.  Here is how you, too, can make this lovely treat!

Kind-of-Spider-Looking Cheeseballs
16 ounces light cream cheese
1 cup shredded sharp cheddar
1 tablespoon worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
finely shredded Mexican-style cheese blend
pretzel sticks
wrapped chocolate “eyes”

In a medium mixing bowl, stir together the cream cheese, cheddar, and seasonings and mustard until well blended.  Spread the Mexican cheese blend on a large plate, and divide the cream cheese mixture into two flattened balls and coat them with the cheese blend.  Use eight pretzel sticks to give each spider its legs, and break a pretzel in half to use as the fangs.  Embed a couple of chocolate eyes (or use stuffed olives), and Voila!  It’s kind of a spider!!!

This is possibly my most apologetic post, ever.  I promise to lay off the theme foods at least until Thanksgiving.

Thanks for reading,

Hey Angela, thanks for the plug! I saw your recipe picture on Facebook (taking a break from preparing for our big Halloween party) and wanted to see what you had come up with. I love your spider. I especially like how the shredded cheese makes it look hairy. So fun!

Thank you! I really am theme-food impaired, so I am sort of proud of Mr. Spider…
